The Great MigrationEleven Day African Photo Safari Aug 15 – 26, 2014
This safari is an eleven-day on ground event, days 1 and 12 are partial photo days. I limit each long bed 4×4 land cruiser to three (3) participants per vehicle so everyone is comfortable with plenty of room to stand, move around and shoot with additional room to keep photo equipment close at hand.
Travel day 1: Aug 15, 2014 Arrive in Arusha, Tanzania
Welcome to Africa! Transfer to lodging. Dinner provided
Days 2 – 5 Serengeti National Park
Day 2: we fly (flight included) to the northern Serengeti, one of Africa’s largest and most famous game reserves. During the months of July, August and September the Great Migration arrives in the area of Northern Serengeti where it crosses the Mara River back into Kenya. With the arrival of the Great Migration the wildlife population grows by almost 2 million, providing a great food source for predators such as lion, cheetah, leopard, and hyena and Crocodile. Enjoy a game drive before settling in for the evening.
During our 4 days on Northern Serengeti we will photograph wildebeests and zebras crossing the Mara River with huge Nile Crocodiles doing their best to see that many don’t make it. Much of our time we will be focused on resident and migratory lions, leopards, hyenas and other species of wildlife including several hundred species of bird. (B,L,D) Nasikia Mobile Camp.
Days 6 – 7 All day Game Drive to Central Serengeti
After breakfast on day 5 we game drive to Central Serengeti. The Serengeti is home to all of the “Big 5” – lion, leopard, Cape buffalo, elephant, and rhino. The park is also home to myriad other animals, including cheetah, giraffe, gazelle, and eland. We will enjoy 3 days photographing this area of the Serengeti. (B,L,D) Nasikia Central Camp
Day 8 Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater
Today features an all-day game drive from the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge overlooking the Crater.
Day 9 – Ngorongoro Crater a “World Heritage Fund”site
Enjoy a full-day game drive in the crater, including a picnic lunch. Game viewing here is fantastic, as most of the animals stay in this area year round. 50,000 head of wildlife including over 100 lions call this 110 sq mi crater home. You can see lion, Cape buffalo, hippo, elephant, and flamingo. This is also your best chance to see the rare black rhinoceros. Return to Sopa Lodge for dinner. (B,L,D) Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge
Day 10 – 11 Ngorongoro–to Tarangire National Park
Feom the Crater we head to Tarangire NP, for two days. The park boasts over 3,000 elephants according to the last wildlife survey. Some elephant herds in the Park have over 250 members. The Tarangire isn’t a small park at over 1,100 sq mi and claims to have the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti, creating a smorgasbord for predators. This NP is the one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelope such as the stately fringe-eared oryx and peculiar long-necked gerenuk are regularly observed. Birds abound with 550 species, the most breeding species in one habitat anywhere in the world. The best time to visit for the sheer number of animals is during the dry season, June – September. And yep, we’ll be there! (B,L,D) Nasikia Tarangire Camp.

After breakfast and a morning game drive we head back to Arusha and home. (B,L)
