Great Migration African SafariAugust 16th - August 25th, 2017
Come and enjoy this ten-day safari to the Serengeti and the “Great Migration” with professional photographer Tom Whetten.
Come and enjoy this ten-day photo safari to Tanzania with special emphasis on photographing the “Great Migration” crossing the Mara River. This is a high season safari of a lifetime. Group size on this all inclusive photographic safari is limited to eleven participants, three to a vehicle.
During our Photography Safari we will visit Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area, and Tarangire National Park. One thing for sure, you will be amazed by the variety of wildlife available you will see and photograph. You can probably name zebra and impala, but there are also dik-diks, elands, gazelles, gerenuks, gnu, oryx, topi, waterbuck, Cape buffalo, hyena, hyrax, fox, jackal, mongoose, warthogs, wild dogs, and that’s just a start. Visual sensory overload is a wonderful thing when you’re looking through a viewfinder.
On the Serengeti National Park one of the most dramatic and memorable safari experiences will be observing tens of thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles migrating across the Mara River. We will head for those crossings, trying to photograph Wildebeests as they gather by the thousands on the banks of the river. Wildebeests run a dangerous gambit trying to cross the Mara River as several hundred Nile crocodiles try to reduce their numbers. With the swift currents, eminent stampedes, crocodiles, and other predators you have a recipe for mass genocide.
The Ngorongoro Crater is world-renowned Heritage Site even though it is relatively small as Africa goes. The Crater floor is only 110 sq mi with a wildlife population of over 50,000 including 100+ lions. A special treat will be to get photographs of the endangered Black-Rhino. We will have a picnic lunch on the crater floor.
Tarangire National Park’s wildlife census put the elephant population in the park at over 3,000 with several herds numbering over 250 animals. The Park boasts the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti, creating a smorgasbord for predators. This national park is the one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelope such as the stately fringe-eared oryx and peculiar long-necked gerenuk are regularly observed. Birds abound with 550 species, the most breeding species in one habitat anywhere in the world.
At the end of a great day of photography we return to camp for a refreshing shower, appetizers and a cool drink before sitting down to dinner and then quiet conversation around the campfire, listening to the sounds of Africa! We can even pretend we are with Teddy Roosevelt on the Great Safaris of the past.
After a day or two in one area, we will game drive our way to the next area and repeat the process. Nightly accommodations are in lodges and tented camps. All tents are equipped with showers and flush toilets with hot and cold running water.
NOTE: On this safari in August 2016, we saw ten’s of thousands wildebeest roaming this area and observed 6 separate river crossings. Additionally we saw and photographed five Black Rhinos, five leopards, 53 lions, hundreds of Cape Buffalos and Elephants, and just about every other East African wildlife you could name.
